CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The director of the West Virginia Lottery is stepping down.

Governor Jim Justice announced Friday that Alan Larrick submitted his resignation. It will take effect Sept. 1.

This came after the launch of sports gaming at the Hollywood Casino in Charles Town Thursday, the governor said.

The governor appointed Doug Buffington as the acting director effective immediately. Buffington is currently the deputy secretary for the West Virginia Secretary of Revenue.

Justice said Larrick expressed his thanks "for the honor and privilege of serving the people of West Virginia and for the opportunity to work with the great staff at the Lottery," a press release stated.

In return, Gov. Justice also thanked Larrick for his service.

“There is no question he has done an excellent job and he will be missed,” Justice said.

The governor appointed Larrick in Jan. of 2017. "In addition to sports gaming, Larrick oversaw a 12% increase in instant sales, the first year over year increase in instant sales in more than a decade, and a $12 million total sales increase from the previous year, the first year over year sales increase since 2012," the governor's press release stated.
