Senate committee will vote on Quintenz CFTC (the body that regulates prediction markets like Kalshi ) nomination Monday
Gaming industry groups asked the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry to slow down, but things are on the move when it comes to the confirmation of Brian Quintenz, President Donald Trump’s nominee for chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
The committee website notes that on Monday, July 21, there are plans for a hearing regarding four regulatory nominees, including Quintenz.
In addition to Quintenz, the committee will also consider the nominations for Under Secretary of Agriculture for Marketing and Regulatory Programs, Under Secretary of Agriculture for Natural Resources and Environment and Under Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics.
Gaming industry wants answers from Quintenz
A wide-ranging group of gaming organizations and tribes penned a letter to the committee earlier this week, imploring them to grill Quintenz further on whether or not he will evaluate the legality of sports-related event contracts offered by firms like Kalshi andCrypto.com.
Quintenz is a former CFTC commissioner who currently sits on the board for Kalshi, the biggest sports contract provider. He said he would resign from the board if appointed, but during his nomination hearing, he remained vague about sports contract legality and enforcement.
“We respectfully request that the Committee require the nominee to fully address the concerns raised at the hearing and commit to upholding and enforcing applicable CFTC regulations before moving forward with his nomination,” read the letter.
Vote will include discussion on nominee
The committee announced plans for a business meeting in advance of a scheduled Senate floor vote at 5:30 pm on Monday. A handful of nominations are already on the docket for voting. In that meeting, the committee is expected to vote on Quintenz’s nomination. That includes debate on the nominee, so it is possible the group does discuss the matter internally in advance of a vote.
If the committee does approve him, he advances to the full Senate floor for a confirmation vote.
While the meeting is taking place in conjunction with a full Senate floor vote, there is no guarantee Quintenz makes it on the agenda. For example, the last time the committee met in advance of a vote to advance a nomination was on May 21 and that nominee has still not been voted on by the full Senate.
Given that Congress is fresh off of Crypto Week, with major legislation like the GENIUS Act headed to Trump’s desk, there may be more of a ticking clock on getting someone in at the CFTC than other roles. The organization is already operating on a bare bones staff but is rumored to be firing roughly two dozen people according to a Reuters report.

Senate committee to vote on Quintenz CFTC nomination Monday
The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry is set to vote on the nomination of Brian Quintenz to chair of the Commodity Futures and Trading Commission (CFTC) — the body that regulates prediction markets like Kalshi — on Monday.
Per an announcement on the committee site, the vote will take place July 21, in conjunction with a 5:30 p.m. floor vote on cloture for the nomination of a new DEA administrator. Committee meetings held in conjunction with a floor vote usually start just before the vote, pause for senators to get to the floor and then resume shortly after voting is complete.
Three other nominations to other bodies will also be considered during the meeting, with Quintenz listed last, suggesting his nomination may occur after the floor vote.
