Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) has announced the launch of a digital slot game with built-in features that make it accessible to people with disabilities.
The game, called Red Panda Tails of Wealth, is the first of its kind. It has accessibility features that include compatibility with assistive technologies like screen readers and keyboard navigation. It also has an accessible heads-up display, and a high-contrast color palette to improve visibility.
"We are excited to launch Red Panda Tails of Wealth on olg.ca, which is the result of a focused effort to put accessibility at the forefront of game design,” said Dave Pridmore, OLG’s chief gaming officer. "The game is a proof of concept that shows how removing barriers to play can move us towards a more inclusive future in the gaming industry.”
Removing Barriers to Gaming
According to Statistics Canada, 28% of Ontarians, or 2.9 million people, aged 15 and older, reported having a disability in 2022. That’s an increase of 3.9% from 2017.
Red Panda Tails of Wealth is like other online casino games in the market, in terms of appearance and gameplay.
OLG worked with Pixiu Gaming and Light & Wonder Spark to develop the game.
Nearly One-Third of Ontarians Report Disability
OLG also partnered with Toronto-based Fable during the process. Fable works to help organizations build inclusive digital products with accessibility testing and training solutions. The platform is powered by people with disabilities.
