Danske Spil headlines Denmark lotteries GGR with 6% uptick

Last year saw lotteries in Denmark enjoy a steady year-over-year growth across all segments, according to data from regulator Spillemyndigheden.

Total lotteries GGR was capped at DKK 3.7m (£417k) by the end of the year, up from the DKK 3.5m for 2023 – a 5.56% difference.

Customer spend has proportionally increased as well, with GGR per customer going from DKK 724 in 2023 to 770 in 2024.

The lottery sector in Denmark is quite segmented, however, with state operator Danske Spil managing a commercial monopoly through its Danske Lotteri Spil franchise, while regulations allow for charity lotteries to operate under a licence by Spillemyndigheden.

The state lottery operator reported total GGR of DKK 3.4bn (£383m) for 2024, up 6.06% YoY from the DKK 3.2bn for the whole of 2023.

Divided by lottery type, Lotto/number games led the GGR pack with a total of DKK 2.8bn compared to the DKK 2.6bn in 2023. Class lotteries came in second, with a total GGR of DKK 362m as opposed to GGR of DKK 360m in 2023. Scratch games, both online and land-based, were third and last, raking in DKK 301m of GGR for FY24 – up 8.3% YoY (2023: DKK 277m).

GGR distribution by lottery type was as follows: lotto games held 80.6%, class lotteries at 10.6%, and scratch games at 8.8%.

Charity lotteries breakdown

In turn, charity lotteries increased in numbers by the end of 2024, with 767 in total by the end of Q4’ 24 compared to the 758 in Q4 23’. 

This was also reflected in the GGR results, with total GGR for 2024 coming in at DKK 288m, compared to the DKK 257m for 2023. 

GGR from licensed charity lotteries was distributed across Denmark to fund various social causes. Around 35% was used to support Humanitarian initiatives, 47% went to disease treatment, sport received 6%, while 3% was set aside for culture.
