State lawmakers begin new legal push for Alabama lottery

Alabama could move closer to having a state lottery in 2021, thanks to state lawmakers.

A state representative from Birmingham, John Rogers (Democrat), prefiled a lottery bill on Friday, January 29 that proposed an amendment to Section 65 of the state constitution that would establish an Alabama Lottery fund.

According to Rogers’ bill, the Alabama lottery would fund both education and general fund projects.

The proposal suggests the money be spilt three different ways.

One way with 40 percent going to the education budget, another 40 percent to the general fund budget and the final 20 percent would be set aside for the corrections department.

A Republican state senator from east Alabama has also said he would introduce a lottery bill in the session that starts next week.
