Paul's Wall June 13
"If we don't have a fiasco at least once a year, that just means we're not stretching to achieve our full potential."
Kasper Holten, Artistic Director for the Royal Danish Opera and Keynote Speaker at the European Lottery Association (EL) conference
Of course, Mr. Holten clarified that the 'fiasco' should not result from sloppy planning and execution; just that the opera company needs to continually challenge itself, and its audience, to grow and think and expand their horizons. He goes on to explain, "As artists, we owe it to our audience to take risks and push ourselves to deliver a transformational experience." Likewise, lottery operators and their commercial partners agreed that the rate of innovation must accelerate if lotteries hope to deliver games that customers will love to play; and assumption of risk is a necessity for that to happen. This was a prevalent theme at the EL 2011 Congress. The world-class business program challenged all of us to think bigger, to take on more ambitious goals, and be willing do whatever it takes to truly optimize the business of funding Good Causes.
Congratulations to the Finnish Lottery, Veikkaus, and the EL team for producing a magnificent conference experience. Risto Nieminen (CEO Veikkaus, President of the World Lottery Association, and EL 2011 Congress host), Friedrich Stickler (Deputy General Director Austrian Lotteries and President of the EL Association), and everyone who worked so hard to make this be the tremendous success that it was should be most proud. The EL Congress is always a highly anticipated event and this year exceeded everyones' expectations in every way that I can think of. The July issue of Public Gaming Magazine will cover the conference in detail. Produced just once every other year, we look forward to the EL 2013 Congress which will be held in Israel. Of course, prior to that, the World Lottery Association is collaborating with NASPL to put on what promises to be the biggest lottery conference ever. The 2012 World Lottery Summit will be held in Montreal in September of next year. NASPL 2011 conference is right around the corner, being held in Indianapolis October 24 to 28. And PGRI Lottery Expo will be in Miami this year, September 21 to 23.
