The online lottery will definitely be put on hold until next year as it needs to wait for the go-ahead from the government, the new head of the Government Lottery Office (GLO) said yesterday.
Pol Maj Gen Attakit Tharichat, former deputy commander of Police Region 4, admitted the fate of the online lottery remains unclear although it is generally assumed that the Pheu Thai-led government will pursue the project.
The online lottery was initiated during the Thaksin Shinawatra administration to try to solve the underground lottery problem and generate more revenues for the government.
However, the plan was scrapped early in 2010 on the ground that it could lead to social problems.
Pol Maj Gen Attakit said the GLO is ready to resume the project once the government gives it the green light, as the contract with Loxley GTech Technology, the contractor for the online lottery project, remains valid.
He said, however, public acceptance is a crucial factor for the government in making a decision.
He played down concerns that selling the new lottery tickets is inherently harmful to the public, saying it could help encourage underground lottery punters to spend on the state lottery instead. That revenue could be used for social development.
