| “You got two different kinds of players you've got casino player and a lottery player there's not a lot of crossover or even if they do both they budget their money and the spend a little bit on lottery and a little bit on the casino and one doesn't necessarily take away from the other. ” State Lottery Director Stephen Martino says. |
BALTIMORE - If it were a jackpot it would be the biggest in history.
But for the Maryland lottery this fiscal year the one point eight billion dollars it took in last year is a continued sign of steady growth, despite the increased competition for the gambling dollar from yet another casino.
“You got two different kinds of players you've got casino player and a lottery player there's not a lot of crossover or even if they do both they budget their money and the spend a little bit on lottery and a little bit on the casino and one doesn't necessarily take away from the other. ” State Lottery Director Stephen Martino says.
Martino says that there were plenty of Maryland casino players before the state's three casinos opened for business they were just going out of state.
If there was going to be an impact, he says they would have noticed it years ago.
But the lottery is in its 15 straight year of growth putting back more than 556 million dollars into state coffers this year and paying out more than a billion dollars in prize money.
Martino says with the expansion of gambling in the state coming from new casinos in Baltimore, Rocky Gap and possibly National Harbor he says the lottery's role at this point is to make sure it all runs smoothly.
"If something goes on the ballot in November for voter approval if it's passed we'll implement it make sure the back ground investigations are done to the highest standards we thoroughly look at the back ground of the casino and gambling operators and we'll make sure that the day to day operations of the casino's are transparent and we encourage fair play." Martino says.
So what games are lottery players playing?
All of them according to Martino.
He says lottery revenues are almost evenly split with 30 percent of the money coming from scratch offs, 30 percent from games like Keno and Racetrack, 30 percent from Pick Three, Pick Four, MultiMatch, and Bonus Match 5.
Only 10 percent comes from Powerball and Mega Millions.
