Lottery officials pledge to meet government budget goal

ST. LOUIS • Missouri Lottery officials said on Thursday the agency would attempt to meet a budget plan requiring them to contribute millions more to state government coffers.
"We will do everything we can to meet it," May Scheve Reardon, the executive director of the Missouri Lottery Commission, said at a lottery meeting on Thursday at Busch Stadium.
The Legislature’s budget is asking for a $288 million lottery contribution, up $8 million from this year's $280 million, which came in a record year. This year, the lottery was projected to contribute $267 million, but a public frenzy over a world record $656 Mega Millions jackpot pushed receipts higher in March.
The lottery pumps millions every year into public education, and has become increasingly relied upon to deliver revenue to a cash starved government.
Lottery games across the board saw significant increases throughout 2012. Missouri scratch off ticket sales were up almost 12 percent over last year, taking in more than $731 million, by far the state's largest lottery profit center. Officials said they hope that continues, which may enable them to meet lofty government goals.
The new fiscal year begins on July 1.
Kevin Roberts, the chairman of the Missouri Lottery Commission, said the lottery is planning a vigorous outreach to keep sales up.
