NC lottery reports record transfer to education

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina state lottery has again generated a record amount of money to the state for public education.
The North Carolina Education Lottery announced Thursday that it had transferred nearly $457 million to the state for the fiscal year ending this weekend, including nearly $103 million resulting from sales in the past three months.
The yearly amount is a record, exceeding last year's total by about $10 million. The transfer has grown every year since the lottery first began selling tickets in 2006.
Lottery officials attributed this year's increase in part to higher scratch-off ticket sales and a huge Mega Millions jackpot in March.
Net proceeds from lottery ticket sales are designed for school construction, pre-kindergarten, college scholarships and teacher salaries for class-size reductions in early grades.
