Ireland Plans to Consolidate Regulation of Gambling

Horse Racing Ireland and other authorities would be consolidated

Plans call for Horse Racing Ireland and a number of other regulatory authorities in the country to be consolidated into a single gambling authority.

The Irish Times and other media outlets have reported plans are in place for a new gambling authority to oversee the country's €8 billion ($9 billion) betting industry, although Ireland's head of government Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has acknowledged it may be 18 months before the plan is activated.

The Irish Times reports the proposed regulatory authority would issue licenses and permits for gambling activities, and replace such current regulators as the revenue commissioners, police, district courts, and local authorities.
