Mastercard has added a new position to its C-suite: chief experience officer. The company has hired Donald Chesnut from SapientRazorfish for the newly created role. Chesnut will officially join the company Jan. 14.

The chief experience officer will be responsible for delivering the “best consumer payment experience, while providing merchants, issuers and other partners a more holistic way to work with Mastercard’s products and services,” according to a company statement.

“In my years in the agency industry, I’ve always believed that the experience isthe brand—that brands are defined by the customer experiences they deliver,” Chesnut said. “I look forward to working with all of the global teams at Mastercard to design new experiences that will define the Mastercard experience of tomorrow.”

Chesnut was previously SapientRazorfish’s global chief experience officer. Prior to that, he served as Sapient’s chief creative officer as well as the lead for the shop’s experience design practice. He has also held positions focused on customer experience at Siegel + Gale and American Express.

“Providing customers with clear, consistent and rewarding experience is what differentiates leaders from the rest of the pack,” said Michael Miebach, Mastercard’s chief product officer, in a statement. “Donald’s background and extensive work with leading brands across cultures and countries will build on a strong foundation and strengthen our ongoing activities.”
