MGM Resorts’ sports betting app could go online in a week

Large-scale access to mobile sports betting could begin as soon as next week, the owner of Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa said Thursday.

“We’ll be up and running as soon as we have all the approvals,” a spokesman for MGM Resorts said, saying the paperwork is all but complete.

“It’s a day-to-day thing,” the MGM spokesperson said when asked when the state Division of Gaming Enforcement is expected to approve playMGM, the casino’s sports betting app.

DraftKings on Wednesday, in partnership with Resorts Casino Hotel, became the first to accept mobile sports bets — but only on a limited, invitation-only basis.

“For a limited time only we’re inviting a few early movers to play DraftKings Sportsbook before we open it up to the general public,” the company said on its site.

DraftKings did not return calls seeking info on how many bettors would be allowed during its trial run.

Caesars Entertainment also committed itself to online wagering in New Jersey but didn’t give a launch date.

FanDuel announced on Thursday a partnership with Boyd Gaming Corp. “to pursue sports betting and online gaming opportunities across the United States.”

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed a law in June that allowed brick-and-mortar operators to take sports bets, but he put a 30-day moratorium on extending the activity to cyberspace.

The state DGE needs to approve each mobile app, including its geolocation, to ensure all bets are placed inside state lines.
