LOTTERY SURPASSES $5 BILLION RAISED FOR EDUCATION

NASHVILLE—Just in time for graduation season, the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation (TEL) has surpassed $5 billion in funds raised to support education programs in the state. The Lottery is also raising awareness about those who have benefited from Lottery-funded awards with a campaign called “TEL Your Story.”

“It’s a special time of year for students and their families,” said Rebecca Hargrove, Tennessee Lottery President and CEO. “Graduating from a post-secondary institution is an achievement of a lifetime, and for many it could not have been accomplished without a Lottery-funded award.

“Five billion dollars is an extraordinary sum, but what’s most meaningful is what these funds have done for hundreds of thousands of students across the state,” said Ms. Hargrove.

To raise awareness about how Lottery-funded awards have made a difference for Tennesseans, the TEL is seeking stories from those who have experienced the benefits of these programs. “From HOPE Scholarships to Tennessee Promise, we want to hear from those whose lives have been impacted by Lottery-funded awards,” said Ms. Hargrove. These stories could be used on the TEL’s website, social media, printed material and other channels.

According to data from the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation, the entity that administers Lottery-funded programs, more than 1.3 million scholarships and grants to in-state education institutions have been earned by deserving students since the Lottery’s inception in 2004, including more than 130,000 awards during the 2017-2018 academic year. Lottery funds are also used to support other education-related activities, including after-school programs implemented in more than 225 sites across the state, and an ongoing initiative to make schools more energy efficient.

In addition to the educational beneficiaries, players have won more than $13.5 billion in prizes and Lottery retailers have earned more than $1.2 billion in retailer commissions.
