China lottery sales up 6pct March, 9pct for 1Q

Ticket sales for China’s official lottery systems rose 5.9 percent in March, taking first-quarter sales revenue growth to 9.4 percent year-on-year, according to the nation’s Ministry of Finance.

In March a total of CNY40 billion (US$6.34 billion) in ticket sales was registered in aggregate for the welfare lottery and its younger sibling the sports lottery. For the full first quarter, such sales amounted to CNY104.18 billion.

First-quarter sales of welfare lottery tickets went up 1.8 percent to CNY52.25 billion, while sports lottery sales rose 18.3 percent to CNY51.93 billion.

Hunan province in central China registered leading year-on-year growth of CNY1.42 billion in the first three months.

Under lottery management laws, money from lottery ticket sales covers administrative fees, public welfare projects and prize money.
