Swedish Gambling Regulator Calls A Meeting In September As Operators Demand Clarity On Gambling Laws

The Swedish gambling regulator has agreed to hold a meeting with all licensed gambling operators in the country after the casino operators demanded more clarity on existing gambling regulations.

The gambling regulator has agreed to an “information meeting” on September 17. While the agenda of the meeting has not been set, the gambling regulator said that it would be confirmed when official invitations would be sent in “mid-August.”

Earlier this week, Branschföreningen för onlinespel (BOS), an association of online gambling operators in Sweden, said that they were concerned over hefty fines being levied on gambling operators in the country and demanded an immediate meeting with the gambling regulator to clarify aspects of the gambling laws.

BOS secretary general Gustaf Hoffstedt wrote to Spelinspektionen and raised his concerns about the future regulatory environment in Sweden. He also noted that in a situation where the interpretation of the Gambling Act is so open that many operators are failing to comply unintentionally, it would be challenging for the entire gambling industry.

In his letter, Hoffstedt wrote, “upholding the integrity of sport, protecting minors from undue harm and – more generally – complying fully with regulatory obligations associated with holding a Swedish gambling license.”

Gaming Innovation Group (GIG) temporarily called off sports betting operations of its two brands Rizk and Guts in Sweden. The company said that Sweden’s vague igaming regulations have pushed their business in “an impossible position.”

Eight online gambling operators including, Bet365, Betfair, Bwin, and The Stars Group have been fined for breach of online gambling laws.
