NY Gaming Commission to vote on sports betting regulations for upstate casinos

Following a public comment period, the state Gaming Commission will vote Monday on sports wagering regulations for del Lago Resort & Casino and three other upstate New York casinos.

The commission is expected to adopt the rules, which would allow casinos to obtain licenses to accept sports bets. The casinos will be required to establish sports wagering lounges where bets can be placed.

What the regulations don't include is a mobile component. There won't be mobile sports betting, at least right away. State lawmakers have introduced legislation to authorize mobile betting in New York.  Other states that legalized sports wagering offer mobile betting. In New Jersey, most of the state's revenue from sports wagering comes from mobile platforms.

While there won't be mobile sports betting, casinos are eager to open sports wagering lounges.  Del Lago Resort & Casino announced in May that it's constructing a sports wagering lounge in partnership with DraftKings. The lounge will take over a space previously occupied by The Vine Restaurant and Bar.

The casino must obtain its sports wagering license before it can open the lounge, but del Lago officials expect that they will begin accepting sports bets this summer.

"We are excited to begin the construction of our new sportsbook and offer this additional amenity for our guests," said Lance Young, vice president of gaming operations at del Lago Resort & Casino.

State have legalized sports betting or in the process of allowing sports wagering after a Supreme Court decision last year. The court overturned a federal law prohibiting states from allowing sports betting.

After the court's ruling, two of New York's neighbors — New Jersey and Pennsylvania — legalized sports betting.
