Oregon Lottery says it will launch full mobile sports wagering book for NFL season

Matthew Shelby a spokesperson with the Oregon Lottery joined me on the radio show on Thursday to talk about the planned return for sports wagering during the upcoming NFL season.

Listen to the full interview here.

The Oregon Lottery is targeting the NFL regular season opener to launch mobile gambling on sports events.

“We’re targeting NFL this year, launching our sports betting offering,” Shelby said. “We’re going to go mobile first just because it’s faster and then follow up with a sports-betting kiosk... it’s going to be much more than that sports action we offered. We’re looking at a full sports book.”

On how the mobile wagering will work:

“We are essentially purchasing an off-the-shelf sports book. We’re not building this from the ground up. It will look very similar to what the mobile betting sites are doing in New Jersey."

On what the Oregon Lottery sees with sports gambling:

“When we look at sports betting we see an opportunity to raise additional revenue while bringing in new players.”

On the mission:

“We have a two-pronged mission -- maximum profit commensurate with public good.”

The interview is worth a listen. Shelby talked about some of the opposition, and the very real possibility that Oregon’s Native American tribes might follow the lottery into sports gambling.
