Kansas Lottery launches program for vending machine sales

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Kansas Lottery is setting up four lottery ticket vending machines around Topeka as part of a pilot program to increase sales.

The agency's Acting Executive Director Stephen Durrell pointed out a majority of other states already have similar vending machines and he hopes they will allow mean more money for the state's coffers.

"We feel the machines will also provide easier access for our players to find their favorite games,” Durrell added.

The first one was installed at John's Food Center. Soon afterwards, Malik El-amin became the first person to buy a ticket on it, picking up a Powerball ticket.

“It was an exciting experience,” El-amin said. “I like how simple it is you don’t have to wait in line to buy a ticket. It was awesome.”

The other three will be at:

  • Gage Center Bowl, 4200 SW Huntoon St.;
  • Kansas Lottery Headquarters, 128 N. Kansas Ave.;
  • West Ridge Lanes, 1935 SW Westport Dr.

Starting next month, the Lottery plans to roll out 272 of the vending machines at select retailers.
