Hidden camera gag rewards “back scratchers” with a chance at $1 million

- Great local kicker with video reaction-

RALEIGH – The North Carolina Education Lottery staged a hidden camera event Thursday morning to promote its new family of Back Scratch tickets.

An actor, wired with a mic, walked the streets of downtown Durham asking people if they would lend a helping hand and scratch his back. If someone said yes, they got a free $10 Back Scratch scratch-off ticket with a chance at a $1 million prize. A camera in the distance caught everyone’s reaction.

Back Scratch tickets proved so popular in the past that the lottery decided for the first time to offer the feature on all of the new tickets in September. That means every ticket offers extra chances to scratch and win when a player turns it over.

“These are such unique and fun tickets that we wanted to do something equally fun and unique to get the word out,” said Mark Michalko, executive director of the lottery.

Tickets in the Back Scratch family range from $1 to $10 and offer top prizes from $50,000 to $1 million. If a player turns any of the tickets over, they’ll find up to five more chances to win.

“Every time we offer a unique game like this our players and our schools win,” Michalko said. “These games allow us to raise millions of dollars every year to support education here in North Carolina.”

Last year, ticket sales from games like the Back Scratch family helped the lottery raise more than $650 million dollars. For details on how lottery money is helping all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, log onto nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
