Maryland Lottery uses automated sorter to expedite shipments of scratch-off tickets

"We ship about 10 million tickets every week, which is significant for a state the size of Maryland and it's growing over time," said Jim Nielsen, assistant deputy director and chief operating officer. Maryland Lottery and Gaming is the fourth largest contributor to the state after income, sales and corporate taxes. Last fiscal year, sales from the lottery contributed $1.2 billion to the state.

A new automated machine at the Maryland Lottery warehouse is helping get scratch-off tickets to retailers much faster.

Workers filled the new automated sorter with tens of thousands of scratch-off tickets that will be sent out to 4,500 retailers across the state.

The machine scans the tickets to determine which game it is and then the bundle is dropped into the appropriate bin. Then workers take the bins and print off a manifest and shipping label and send it on its way.

Ten million tickets go out every single week to stores.

Scratch-off tickets contributed $750 million, so officials are hopeful this machine will increase sales even more because orders can be filled much quicker.

"It gives us much more efficiency and speed when we are packing tickets for our retail locations," Nielsen said.

The 15,000-square-foot warehouse houses thousands of boxes with millions of tickets, and don't think about pulling off a heist because the tickets aren't activated until the vendor does so.

It's a neat operation that one in three scratch-off players benefits from in some form or fashion. The extremely lucky hit the jackpot.
