Sports gambling on horizon for New York

ALBANY, N.Y. (WTEN) - Sports gambling could be right around the corner for New Yorkers. With legislation already in place, lawmakers just need the OK from the gaming commission.

“When we authorized the casinos, we had sports betting built into that could it be authorized,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “We want people to come back to Upstate. The casino was part of that revitalization of these upstate cities," said Santabarbara.

Santabarabara says sports gambling could bring an additional $30 million in revenue for the state.

“If they’re going to place those bets, I want them placing those bets in New York where our kids and our schools can have the benefit of the education revenue that’s going to enhance our schools,” said Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner.

Woerner’s looking beyond sports gambling in casinos, expanding it to betting on a phone.

“It’s just really about changes in consumer preferences and it’s time for the law to catch up to that,” Woerner said.
